Simbalbara National Park, Himachal Pradesh

Simbalbara National Park, Himachal Pradesh

Located in the lower Shivalik ranges of Paonta Valley, Simbalbara National Park (formerly Simbalbara Wildlife Sanctuary) is a peaceful wildlife retreat spread across lush Sal forests, deep green valleys, and river landscapes. It is managed by the Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh.

This lesser-explored destination offers nature lovers an opportunity to walk through quiet jungle trails while spotting wild animals and colorful birds in their natural habitat. It also lies close to Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary in Haryana, forming a major ecological belt.

History of Simbalbara National Park

Simbalbara National Park has a rich conservation history dating back to the pre-independence era. Initially protected as the Colony Reserve Forest, this area gained early attention for its thick Sal forests and valuable Himalayan biodiversity. Recognizing the ecological importance of the region, the government notified it as Simbalbara Wildlife Sanctuary in 1958, marking the start of formal wildlife preservation and habitat protection in the lower Shivalik hills.

In 2010, the sanctuary was further upgraded to National Park status, covering around 27 sq. km. This change aimed to minimize human impact, support eco-tourism, and create better protection for endangered species like leopards, goral, muntjac, and Himalayan black bears. Over the years, Simbalbara has grown into an appealing destination for nature lovers thanks to its scenic landscape, peaceful environment, and flourishing wildlife.
