Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Exploring the Andaman and Nicobar Islands: A Journey Through Tropical Bliss

If there’s a place in India that truly feels like a slice of paradise, it has to be the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Nestled in the heart of the Bay of Bengal, this enchanting archipelago is a stunning blend of crystal-clear turquoise waters, powdery white sands, and lush palm-fringed shores. Every moment here feels like stepping into a postcard – peaceful, surreal, and untouched by the rush of everyday life.

Visiting the Andamans had been a long-time dream of mine, and when I finally made the journey, it exceeded every expectation. From the calm of the beaches to the warmth of the island culture, everything about the experience was magical – the kind that stays with you long after you've left.

Getting There

Getting to the Andamans is easier than you'd think. I flew into Port Blair, the capital, from Chennai (there are also direct flights from Kolkata, Delhi, and Bangalore). The aerial view of scattered emerald islands in a sea of blue? Unreal.

Travel Tip: Always Choose the Window Seat for Andaman Views

Day 1-2: Exploring Port Blair

Cellular Jail – A Walk Through History
First stop: the infamous Cellular Jail. A solemn but powerful reminder of India’s freedom struggle. The light and sound show at night gave me goosebumps – the narration, the visuals, the ambiance... you could feel the emotion.

Corbyn’s Cove

A laid-back beach perfect for unwinding as the sun dips below the horizon. Sipping on fresh coconut water here hits differently—especially after a warm, adventure-filled day.

Day 3-4: Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

A 2-hour ferry ride from Port Blair and you land in what I can only describe as Bali meets Maldives meets Robinson Crusoe.

Radhanagar Beach – Heaven Exists

Voted one of Asia’s best beaches – and rightly so. Powdery white sand, shallow crystal-clear water, and zero crowds. I just sat there, feet in the surf, watching the sky melt into pinks and purples.

Scuba Diving in Nemo Reef

I finally took the leap—quite literally—and went for my very first scuba diving experience. Coral gardens, colorful fish, and complete underwater silence. It was surreal. No photos can ever do it justice.

Day 5: Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

Much quieter than Havelock, Neil is all about slow travel. Rented a bicycle and explored:
  • ? Laxmanpur Beach (great for sunsets )
  • ? Natural Rock Bridge
  • ? Bharatpur Beach (perfect for snorkeling)
It was as if the entire island belonged to me—peaceful, untouched, and blissfully quiet.

Day 6: Back to Port Blair + Exploring the Enchanting Ross Island (a.k.a. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island)

On my last day, I took a boat to Ross Island, a former British administrative hub now reclaimed by nature. Creeping roots through abandoned buildings, deer grazing peacefully – it's like walking through a beautiful post-apocalyptic movie set.

A Taste of Local Cuisine

  • ? Seafood platters – especially at New Lighthouse Restaurant, Port Blair
  • ? Coconut prawns curry
  • ? Bengali-style fish thali
  • ? Don't miss the local banana chips and tender coconut

Best Time to Visit for the Perfect Experience

October to May is ideal. I went in early April – sunny days, calm seas, and just the right amount of tourists.

Travel Tips

  • ? Carry cash – not all places accept cards.
  • ? Internet is slow – embrace the digital detox!
  • ? Respect the rules, especially near tribal areas (they're protected).
  • ? Make sure to book your ferry tickets ahead of time—especially if you're traveling during peak season, they fill up fast.

Final Thoughts

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands aren’t just a destination; they’re a feeling. One of quiet reflection, natural beauty, and the pure joy of disconnecting. If you’re looking for a mix of adventure, history, and tropical bliss, this is your place.
  • I came back with sandy shoes, sun-kissed skin, and a heart full of stories. Can’t wait to return.
