History of Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, located between Dalhousie and Khajjiar, was officially declared a sanctuary in 1958 to protect the Himalayan wildlife and dense deodar forests of the region. Historically, this forest belt served as a royal hunting reserve during the British era due to the population of wild animals like black bears, leopards, and pheasants. Over time, it transformed into a protected zone under the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department to conserve its rich biodiversity.

The name ‘Kalatop’ means ‘black cap’, inspired by the dark, thick deodar canopy that covers the entire ridge. The region is also influenced by the ecology of the mighty River Ravi, which flows nearby and nourishes the lush forest cover. Today, Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is known not only for wildlife spotting but also as a popular eco-tourism and trekking destination with well-marked nature trails leading toward Khajjiar. Adventure lovers, bird watchers, and families visit throughout the year to experience untouched natural beauty.
