Brajeshwari Temple, Himachal Pradesh

The ancient Brajeshwari Temple is one of the most revered sites of Himachal Pradesh that is said to be a thousand years old. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Vajreshwari and draws a large number of devotees throughout the year. Built-in the shikhara style of architecture, the temple is adorned with intricate carvings and imposing stonework. Fine carvings of Hindu deities are quite impressive. The outer walls of the temple display short inscriptions while its entrance gate has a drum house called the Nagarkhana. Two smaller temples are located on either side of the temple and are worth a visit. The best time to visit the temple is during March when a grand fair is held in honor of the presiding goddess. Navaratri (a holy nine-day festival) is celebrated with great fervor. Surrounded by forest-laden mountain slopes, the temple's ancient grey stone building adds to the old-world charm of the place and makes for a true Himachali experience. Devotees who flock to the temple are smitten by its peaceful aura and picturesque surroundings. The temple is located at the end of Chamba's bustling Jansali Bazaar.

History

It is said that the temple was not known as Bajreshwari Devi Temple when for the first time it was built. According to the history of this region, the temple was attacked by Mohammad Ghazni, the notorious invader, and ruined in 1009. Later, the temple was reconstructed. It is in 1905, the temple got destroyed by a devastating earthquake. The temple is reopened to the public in 1920. The temple of Bajreshwari Devi is one of the few remaining temples from the glorious past of Kangra.
