Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir
Located in the breathtaking Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, Gulmarg is one of India’s most beautiful hill stations and a world-famous skiing destination. Surrounded by snow-covered Himalayan peaks, lush pine forests, and colorful flower meadows, Gulmarg literally means “Meadow of Flowers.” This scenic paradise attracts nature lovers, honeymooners, adventure seekers, and families throughout the year.
At an altitude of around 2,650 meters (8,690 feet), Gulmarg offers a refreshing escape from the heat during summer and transforms into a winter wonderland during snowfall. Its untouched alpine beauty, fresh mountain air, and peaceful environment make it a must-visit destination in Kashmir.
History of Gulmarg
Gulmarg was originally discovered as a meadow by a local shepherd and was later developed as a summer retreat by rulers of Kashmir. During the Mughal era, Emperor Jehangir is said to have collected thousands of flowers from Gulmarg to plant in his gardens. The region later caught the attention of the British during colonial times, who established it as a hill resort and golf destination.
Today, Gulmarg is internationally known for its ski slopes, Asia’s highest golf course, and the spectacular Gulmarg Gondola.
