History of Ardhkuwari Mata Mandir
According to Hindu mythology, Mata Vaishno Devi took refuge inside the Ardhkuwari Cave when the demon Bhairavnath was chasing her with evil intentions. To protect herself, the Goddess meditated inside this narrow cave for nine months, symbolizing the duration of human pregnancy.
When Bhairavnath finally located her, Mata Vaishno Devi transformed into Mahakali and created a new exit by striking the rock wall with her trident. It is believed that she beheaded the demon at this spot. His body remained near the cave while his head fell at the site where Bhairavnath Temple now stands.
Because of its womb-like structure, Ardhkuwari is also called Garbh Joon Cave, representing spiritual rebirth. Another name associated with it is Hathimatha due to its elephant-head-like structure as viewed from the outside.

The Ardhkuwari cave is naturally formed and measures around 52 feet in length with extremely narrow interiors. Pilgrims have to pass through the cave on their knees and elbows, making it one of the most humbling experiences of the Yatra.
