Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary, Jammu And Kashmir

The Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden paradise in north Kashmir, known for its dense forests, alpine meadows, rare bird species, and scenic mountain ecosystem. Located near the village of Lachipora along the northern banks of the Jhelum River, this sanctuary is ideal for nature lovers, bird watchers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts who seek peaceful offbeat destinations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Established in 1987 by the Department of Wildlife Protection, Lachipora Sanctuary is famous for conserving the rare and endangered Western Tragopan and the elusive Markhor (Wild Goat). The landscape here is a stunning blend of coniferous forests, broadleaf vegetation, alpine pastures, and high-altitude woodlands, making it a biodiversity hotspot of the Kashmir Valley.

History of Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary

Before being notified as a protected sanctuary, Lachipora and its surrounding forests were traditional grazing and hunting grounds used by local communities. Due to uncontrolled hunting and timber extraction, wildlife populations began to decline rapidly during the mid-20th century.

In response to growing environmental concerns and awareness, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir officially declared Lachipora a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1987. The primary aim was to protect endangered species like the Western Tragopan, Himalayan wildlife habitat, and fragile forest ecosystems.

Since then, controlled access, afforestation drives, wildlife monitoring programs, and local community involvement have transformed Lachipora into an important conservation zone in North Kashmir.

Geography & Natural Landscape

Lachipora Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across mountainous terrain with altitudes ranging between 1,630 meters to 3,300 meters above sea level. The sanctuary lies close to the river Jhelum and is surrounded by thick forests and rolling alpine pastures.
