Likir Monastery’s original name, Klu-kkhyil Gompa, translates to “The Naga Encircled Monastery.” According to legend, two protective serpent spirits, Nanda and Takako, are believed to guard this sacred site.
Founded in the 11th century, Likir was re-established in the 15th century under the guidance of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) Sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It has since become an important center of Buddhist teaching and monastic life in Ladakh.
