History & Mythological Significance

Established in 1989, Gangotri National Park was created to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and the sacred Gangotri Glacier, the origin of the holy River Ganga.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended from heaven to purify the Earth, and her divine descent took place here, at Gaumukh, within the park’s boundaries. The place holds deep spiritual importance, as it’s believed that taking a dip in the icy waters of the Ganga cleanses one’s sins and grants salvation.
