The climbing for Gangotri II has a height of 6590 m begins from Rudugaira Nallah and then a steep ascend through narrow couloirs lead the mountaineers to the top of the peak. Gangotri II is an open peak and it rises above the Rudugaira Glacier and is fringed by Mt. Rudugaira to its right and the popular peak of Auden’s Col to the left.

Mythology of Gangotri Peaks

According to Hindu mythology, the Gangotri region is the divine abode of Goddess Ganga, who descended from heaven to purify the earth. The surrounding mountains, including Gangotri I, II, and III, are believed to be the guardians of the sacred glacier from which the Ganges emerges.

It is said that these peaks were named to honor the descent of the goddess, symbolizing her three divine forms - purity, power, and protection. Local beliefs also associate the mountain ranges with the Pandavas’ journey to heaven (Swargarohini Yatra), mentioned in the Mahabharata. Many locals and sages regard these snow-clad peaks as embodiments of divine energy, protecting the holy Gangotri valley.

The journey to Gangotri II usually begins from Gangotri town and passes through dense forests, alpine meadows, and glacial terrains. The Rudugaira Glacier serves as the base camp for the climb. As you ascend, you can witness the breathtaking beauty of nearby peaks such as Mt. Rudugaira and Auden’s Col, which flank Gangotri II on either side.
