History of Jagannath Rath Yatra

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is an ancient Hindu festival that began in the 12th century after the construction of the Jagannath Temple in Puri by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva. However, the tradition is believed to be even older, with roots in the Puranas.

The Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his birthplace the Gundicha Temple accompanied by his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, in grand wooden chariots. The festival promotes the idea of divine accessibility, allowing everyone to receive the Lord’s blessings outside the temple.

Today, Rath Yatra is one of the biggest chariot festivals in the world, celebrated not only in Puri but also globally.

Significance of Rath Yatra

The Rath Yatra symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to his birthplace, the Gundicha Temple, considered the home of his aunt. Devotees believe that pulling the chariots during this journey cleanses one’s sins and grants liberation (moksha). This yatra reflects divine love, humility, equality, and universal brotherhood.

Safety Concerns & Incidents During Rath Yatra 2025

Tragically, the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 in Puri witnessed a major incident that raised serious questions about crowd management. On June 29, 2025, during the Bahuda Yatra (the return procession of Lord Jagannath), a stampede near Gundicha Temple resulted in the death of three devotees, and over a dozen others were hospitalized with injuries ranging from fractures to severe dehydration and suffocation.

Despite the Odisha government’s implementation of modern surveillance systems, including AI-powered crowd density tracking, drones, and CCTV grids, the massive turnout of lakhs of pilgrims overwhelmed the control mechanisms. Eyewitnesses reported that a sudden push in a congested section near a barricaded zone triggered panic, causing people to fall over one another.

Emergency services, though present, faced delays in reaching the injured due to blocked pathways and lack of immediate communication from the site of the incident. The local police and disaster management teams have been criticized for inadequate planning, especially in key bottleneck areas near the Gundicha Gate.
