Amarnath Yatra 2025 – Complete Guide to Dates, Routes, Registration & Travel Tips
Amarnath Yatra 2025 is one of the most revered spiritual journeys in Hinduism. Every year, lakhs of devotees undertake this holy pilgrimage to the Amarnath Cave in Jammu & Kashmir to have darshan of Baba Barfani – the naturally formed ice Shivling that symbolizes Lord Shiva. This annual yatra is held during the sacred Shravan month (July–August) and is considered a path toward moksha (liberation).
The Amarnath Cave, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters (12,756 feet), is accessible only for a limited time during summer. The Amarnath Yatra 2025 start date has been officially confirmed as 3rd July 2025, with the yatra concluding on 9th August 2025, which coincides with Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima) — marking the traditional end of the yatra season.
History of Amarnath Cave
The Amarnath Cave is believed to be over 5,000 years old and holds immense religious and mythological significance in Hinduism. It is the sacred site where Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati, an event known as the Amar Katha.
Mythological Origins
As per ancient legends, Maa Parvati once asked Lord Shiva the reason behind his immortality and why he wore a garland of skulls. To answer her, Lord Shiva chose a remote and isolated location – the Amarnath Cave – where no living being could overhear their divine conversation.
To ensure secrecy, Lord Shiva abandoned all his divine symbols along the journey:
- Left Nandi (bull) at Pahalgam
- Removed the moon from his head at Chandanwari
- Released the snake from his neck at Sheshnag
- Left his son Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat
- Let go of the five elements at Panchtarni
He then entered the cave with Maa Parvati and sat on deerskin to enter deep samadhi before narrating the Amar Katha.

The Legend of Immortal Pigeons
According to the legend, during the narration of the Amar Katha, a pair of pigeons was present inside the cave and overheard the secret of immortality being shared by Lord Shiva to Maa Parvati. Since they listened to the divine knowledge, the pigeons are believed to have attained immortality. Even today, many pilgrims claim to spot a pair of pigeons near the Amarnath Cave, believed to be the same immortal birds, symbolizing the eternal presence of the divine.
Rediscovery of the Cave
The rediscovery of the cave is attributed to a shepherd named Buta Malik in the 15th century. As the story goes, Buta Malik was handed a bag of coal by a saint. Upon returning home, the coal had turned into gold. Grateful and curious, Buta went back to thank the saint but instead found the holy cave of Amarnath at the same spot.
A Symbol of Faith and Devotion
Since then, the Amarnath Yatra has become one of the most important pilgrimages in Hinduism. Despite the harsh weather, altitude, and difficult terrain, lakhs of devotees brave the trek every year to get a glimpse of the divine ice Shivling — a symbol of faith, sacrifice, and immortality.
