Triveni Sangam

Triveni Sangam

Often touted as Triveni Sangam, Sangam is one of the highly revered religious sites in Prayagraj. The term ‘Sangam’ refers to the point of confluence where the most sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati meet to offer a scenic vista in Prayagraj to relish. As per Hindu beliefs, a holy dip in the water of the Sangam cleanses one from all sins. Therefore, you can find a lot of Hindu pilgrims swarming this top attraction for taking a holy bath to attain salvation (moksha).

Not only this, but believers also come to this religious place to immerse the ashes of their deceased relatives in the holy water of Sangam. As per Hindu Mythology, the ashes of a deceased person must be immersed in the holy water of the River Ganges to help them achieve moksha after death. At this place of tourist interest in Prayagraj, the famous Kumbh Mela is also held. One of the must-see things here is the evening Aarti which is held at Saraswati Ghat and Nehru Ghat which is located close to Triveni Sangam. To relish the sights of the confluence, one can reach here from Qila Ghat where the boating facility is available.

Moreover, the Sangam where the brownish Ganga meets the slightly greenish Yamuna is indeed a sight to behold. If you take a boat ride to the gently flowing waters of Ganga and Yamuna, you'll be able to make out the difference in the colors of water from the two rivers. Platforms have been constructed in the middle of the Sangam where one can perform poojas like Shraddh and Narayan Nagbali. The water is clean enough for a bath and also not very deep, so it is fun to take a dip in the water here. Also, the Sangam offers breathtaking views not only of the merging waters but also of the Allahabad Fort, and the New Yamuna Bridge.

History of Triveni Sangam

According to our sacred texts, River Saraswati, Ganga, and the Yamuna meet in Prayaga city. Prayaga is the name of the ancient city of Allahabad. This exact place where it happens is called Triveni Sangam because it is the point of amalgamation of the three holy rivers. Apart from being the holy confluence, it is also considered the place where the drops of nectar had fallen during the Amrit Manthan.

Perhaps this is another reason why Kumbh Mela is also organized here. Legends also state that just one dip in the holy waters can help a person significantly in improving their Karma and help them attain Moksha.
