History

A long time ago, Lord Shiva went into deep penance and meditation because of the death of his first companion - Devi Sati. Lord Shiva refused to come back out of his meditation and stayed away from all worldly affairs for several years.

Meanwhile, a demon by the name of Tarakasura was troubling the Gods about to no end. At the request of the Gods, Devi Sati was reborn as Maa Shailaputri, the girl of the Himalaya. She was conjointly referred to as Maa Parvati.

It was said that she would bring Lord Shiva out of his meditation and their child would endure killing Tarakasura. One day, Sage Narada arrived at Maa Parvati’s doorstep and told her everything regarding her previous birth.

He additionally told her that she would have to perform severe Tapasya (penance), in order that Lord Shiva will understand her truth. Maa Parvati agreed and gave up all the comforts and luxuries of her palace. Soon, she went into a forest and commenced her dedicated penance.

Thousands of years passed but Maa Parvati did not quit. She refused to eat or drink anything, whereas conjointly fighting through the cold, the rains and therefore the storms. Because of this, her skin turned dark and her body was now covered with mud, soil, leaves, etc.

She turned very pale and skinny. Because of this severe Tapasya, Maa Parvati lost all her radiance and have become very weak. Finally, once a protracted time, Lord Shiva took notice of her penance. He even tested her devotion and realized that she was so his Sati, from the previous birth.

Lord Shiva agreed to marry Maa Parvati. Since, she had become weak and was covered in all kinds of dirt, Lord Shiva decided to cleanse her. He allowed the holy waters of Ganga flowing through his hair, to fall onto Maa Paravti. This sacred water washed away all the dirt from Maa Parvati’s body and he or she was able to regain her lost radiance.

The rituals

There is a very simple way (Vidhan) to worship Mahagauri. First of all, install the idol or picture of Mahagauri on a wooden post or in the temple. After this, spread white cloth on the post and place Mahagauri Yantra on it and establish the yantra. Mother is the giver of beauty. Meditate on the mother with a white flower in her hand.

After meditation, offer flowers to the feet of the mother and worship Goddess Bhagwati with yantra with Panchopchar method or Shodashopachar method and offer Naivedya made from milk. After that Om Hreem Klein Chamundayai Viche. Chant twenty one rounds of the mantra along with Om Maha Gauri Devyai Namah and pray to the mother for fulfillment of wishes. In the end, perform aarti and kirtan of the mother.

Mahagauri Mata Bhog

On the eighth day of Navratri, the form of Mahagauri is worshipped. It is said that offering coconut on this day brings happiness and prosperity in the house. By offering coconut, one gets rid of all the problems related to children.

'चमन' बोलो तो सोच तुम क्या रहे हो
महागौरी माँ तेरी हरदम ही जय हो ॥
