The second day of Sharad Navratri. The day, dedicated to Mata Brahmacharini, is known as Dwitiya. Brahmacharini is the second avatar of a god Hindu deity Durga.As per legends, Mata Brahmacharini is that the daughter of the Himalayas. She was named Brahmacharini by Lord Brahma. Devotees believe that giving prayers to Brahmacharini offers peace and happiness. Brahmacharini is always bare foot and carries a Jap mala or prayer beads in the right hand and a Kamandal or pitcher in the left.

Brahmacharini Mata / Dwitiya

On Dwitiya, the Goddess Brahmacharini is a form of Durga Devi and she is one whoreduces anger. Hence, the second day is devoted to this Godess.

History

According to completely different versions of her story, maiden Parvati resolves to marry Shiva. Her parents learn of her want, discourage her, however, she pursues what she needs and did Tapasya for about 5000 years. In meanwhile, Gods approached god Kamadeva - the Hindu god of desire, erotic love, attraction, and affection and asks him to generate desire in Shiva for Parvati They did this because of an asura named Tarkasur who gained the boon of being killed by only Lord Shiva's child. Kama reaches Shiva and shoots an arrow of desire.

Shiva opens his third eye in his forehead and burns the Kama to ashes. Parvati doesn't lose her hope or her resolve to win over Shiva. She begins to live in mountains like Shiva, engages within the same activities as Shiva, one in all asceticism, yogin, and tapas - it's this side of Parvati that's deemed to be that of Goddess Brahmacharini. Her ascetic pursuit attracts the attention of Shiva and awakens his interest.

He meets her in disguised form, tries to discourage her, telling her Shiva's weaknesses and temperament issues. Parvati refuses to pay attention and insists on her resolve. During this time demon named Prakandasura attacked Parvati along with his million asura. Parvati was at the last stage to complete her tapas. Hence, she cannot let her tapas breach, However, the demon was onto her thus seeing Parvati helpless Hindu deity Lakshmi and Hindu deity Saraswati felt unhappy and that they came to assist her.

Hindu deity Lakshmi and Hindu deity Saraswati defended Hindu deity Parvati however the number of demons was such a lot that they were unable to handle it. After many days of fight, the water within the Kamandalu kept besides falls and all the demons get washed away with the flood caused by the water. Now the Prachandasura wants a defeat, therefore, Parvati opens her eyes slightly and fire came out that burned the demon to ashes.

Everybody within the universe was impressed by the tapas performed by the Hindu deity Parvati. Shiva finally accepts her and that they got married. Her abode is within the Svadhishthana Chakra. Brahmacharini signifies bachelorhood and therefore the color white signifies purity.

The rituals

Maa Brahmacharini is worshipped on Dwitiya tithi by offering flowers, akshat, Roli, and sandalwood. Devotees pour milk, curd, and honey and offer bhog as the pooja vidhi. After this, paan, betel nut, and cloves are also offered. Her favorite flower is jasmine and hence offered during the Puja. It's believed that worshipping Maa Brahmacharini blesses with calmness and happiness in life.

Bhog

On the second day of Navratri, Goddess Durga is worshiped in the form of Brahmacharini. Sugar is offered to the mother on this day. It is said that by doing this the life of all the members of the house increases.

दधाना कर पद्माभ्याम अक्षमाला कमण्डलू।
देवी प्रसीदतु मई ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा।।
