Bhagwan Parshuram Kund Mandir

Dedicated to sage Parshuram, the popular site Parshuram Kund is situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and 21 km north of Tezu attracts pilgrims from Nepal, across India, and from nearby states of Manipur and Assam. Over 70,000 devotees and sadhus take a holy dip in its water each year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, in January.

Thousands of pilgrims visit this in the winter every year and especially on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, pilgrims come for a holy dip in the sacred kund which is believed to wash away one’s sins.

History of Bhagwan Parshuram Kund Mandir


The site of the Parashuram Kund as established by the sadhu was in existence until the 1950 Assam earthquake that shook the whole of the North-East and the kund was completely covered. A very strong current is now flowing over the original site of the kund but massive boulders have in a mysterious way embedded themselves in a circular formation in the river bed thus forming another kund in place of the old.

Parshuram Kund is a Hindu pilgrimage center situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and 21 km north of Tezu in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Architecture of Bhagwan Parshuram Kund Mandir

Parashuram Kund is a small temple pilgrim complex. Behind the temple premises, there are idols depicting the legendary story of Parashurama killing his mother. The small temple has Lord Vishnu and Parashurama idols inside the temple premises.

Parshuram Mela at Bhagwan Parshuram Kund Mandir

The focal point of Makar Sankranti which falls on the 14th and 15th of January is the Parshuram kund Mela which is celebrated in Telu Shati/Tailung area in Lohit District and which is a regular event since 1972. The Mela is held both at District Headquarters, Tezu, and Parshuram Kund/ Telu Shati/Tailung area which is 199 km from Dibrugarh, the nearest Airport.

During the Mela held from the 1st week of January to the 31st of January, pilgrims and common visitors from all over the country and Nepal visit the place for sightseeing and a holy dip at the famous Lohit River. The District Administration with the collaboration of the Department of Tourism has been making elaborate arrangements for security along with the provision of shelters. Other public facilities like drinking water, toilets, ration shops, and medical centers are also arranged for the safe and comfortable stay of pilgrims.
