Amidst the farmhouses of Vasant Kunj, there is located one of those highly revered Christian shrines in Delhi - St. Alphonsa’s Church. Offering its services in three different languages, Hindi, English, and Korean, this holy abode has a distinct pride and significance in the hearts of people of the Christian community. If we go back to its history, it says that the Church was named after Saint Alphonsa - the first Indian woman to be canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint. Besides, when requested Korean mass is also organized by the church. Said to be built in 2002, this holy abode was initially esteemed as The Church of Blessed Alphonsa, however, it was after 2008 when the sister Alphonsa was officially honored as the saint by the Vatican, the church was renamed St. Alphonsa’s Church.

Apart from its high sacred importance, St. Alphonsa’s Church is also known for its glorious architecture. Inside this popular church in Delhi, the blissful and serene atmosphere makes it an ideal place for one to indulge in deep prayer or a meditate zone for a while. On Sundays, the Church receives oodles of devotees, mainly the members of the church who come here to be a part of the weekly mass. Along with Sundays, the church also witnesses a large gathering of people, both locals as well as tourists, on days of festivals like Christmas, Easter, and Palm Sunday. Located amidst a pastoral surrounding, at present, St. Alphonsa’s Church is a sacred place standing with pride.

Architecture

The striking structure of St. Alphonsa’s Church is a masterpiece of beautiful architecture. The glorious interior of the church is adorned with rich detailed carvings and sculptures depicting the tales from the Holy Bible. Besides, the wooden detailing along with the white interior gives a perfect space to tourists who come to pray and to meditate. There is also an image of Jesus Christ in the church placed on a wooden background.
