Ngadak Monastery

Ngadak Monastery exudes charm and spirituality. This monastery located a short distance from the main town of Namchi was built during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal by Tensung Namgyal as the palace for Her Highness Pendi Ongmu. Today, you can notice the monastery is supported by iron railings, and a new Gumpa is also being constructed as the old structure suffered damage due to the earthquake in the 17th century. Ngadak is one of the oldest monasteries in Namchi and it is an apt place to seek peace and meditate amidst nature. It is said that whoever visits here has to make a promise to return to the Gumpa. The name, Ngadak itself means promise.

History

Ngadak Monastery was built in the 17th century by Tensung Namgyal during the reign of Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal. This monastery was constructed as a palace of her Highness Pendi Ongmu. It ultimately has been converted to a monastery.

Architecture

Built beautifully with stone and wood, it was damaged by an earthquake and is a testimony to the old religious culture of Sikkim. A large new Gumpa has been constructed near the old one as the old structure is ruined however it still exudes a sense of old Sikkim.
